Karin Spitfire is a pioneering feminist activist, conceptual artist and poet. She uses a variety of mediums to convey her message, from song to dance and poetry, rant and diatribe, prints, artist books, and letterpress. To talk with Karin is to witness an incredible passion for her art, her values and beliefs, and her message.
She has worked with battered women and focused on healing the impact of trauma. In addition to her work with survivors, she developed and taught numerous workshops and classes in embodiment through movement, challenging the patriarchal western paradigm of body-mind, human/nature split.
Her poetry books include Standing with Trees, The Body in Late Stage Capitalism and a chapbook Wild Caught. Karin was named Poet Laureate of Belfast for 2007 and 2008. In 2010, the year the last sardine factory in Maine closed, Karin and Gary Lawless, American Poet and Gulf of Maine Bookstore owner, produced a multiple-location event called The Sardine Extravaganza.
